How to find childcare gaps during school breaks

The reliable method is interval-based: define the need, merge confirmed coverage and subtract it. A calendar with many events is not necessarily a covered day.

1. Write the required interval

For each child and day, state when an adult must actually be responsible. Allow different hours by weekday.

2. Count only explicit coverage

A parent being at home, on leave or remote-working counts only when they explicitly accept the care interval.

3. Merge confirmed blocks

Merge overlaps and adjacent intervals before subtraction. Keep cancelled, rejected and waitlisted options out of confirmed coverage.

4. Classify every remaining interval

Look for a gap at the start, between solutions, at the end or across the whole day. Then check pickup responsibility and incompatible locations.

5. Repeat after every change

A cancellation or changed end time can reopen a solved day. Preserve audit history so collaborators understand why.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a 15-minute gap worth recording?

Yes. It may represent a real supervision or transport problem even when short.

Should tentative care be hidden?

No. Show it as provisional next to the unresolved gap.

Can the same solution cover several children?

Yes when its times, capacity and responsible adult genuinely apply to each child.
